There are a few other utilities I'd like to update too but this is the msot important. I'd like to add color to nano when editing files and apparently there are some errors with in the defult include files.
I'm using the default sample nanorc and sh.nanorc html.nanorc python.nanorc files.

When I open nano I get errors saying 'magic command not understood' and 'header comand not understood' Newer version of nano apparently fixes these issue on Ubuntu so I'm hoping that they take care of this issue on OS X as well.
I've tried downloading the source and i ran
./configure
make
Download Nano Shout Software Macbook
make install
and still when I type 'nano -V' I'm still on the old version.
Hopefully if I can figure out how to update this to the newest version I can do the same for tcpdump and a few other programs as well.
